This is a running collection of the AI search statistics we consider reliable, compiled from the most authoritative source available for each figure rather than secondhand blog posts. Every number links to its source. Where a figure is vendor-published or measurement-dependent, we say so, because AI search data varies a lot by who is counting and how. We update this page as new research lands, so treat the "last updated" date above as the shelf life. If you cite one of these numbers, follow the link and check the source first, which is exactly the standard AI models are starting to apply too.
How many searches now end without a click?
In the first four months of 2026, 68% of US Google searches ended without a click, up from 60.45% in 2024 (SparkToro, using Similarweb clickstream data). Zero-click search, a search that ends without the user clicking through to any website, has been rising for years as search features resolve queries on the results page itself.
The value is moving from the click to the mention. We unpack what that means in The New Front Page.
AI Overviews: how common, and how costly
AI Overviews, Google's AI-generated summaries shown above the traditional search results, are now the most widely encountered AI feature on the internet.
- AI Overviews appeared on roughly 48% of tracked US queries in February 2026, up from about 31% a year earlier (BrightEdge). Prevalence is measurement-dependent: other trackers report figures from around 20–25% up to 60–65% depending on keyword set and method.
- When an AI Overview appears, it reduces click-through to the position-one page by 58%, measured across 300,000 keywords on December 2025 data (Ahrefs). This is up from a 34.5% reduction in the same study a year earlier.
- AI Overviews reach an estimated 2.5 billion monthly users globally as of I/O 2026 (Pichai keynote, reported by CNBC).
Does ranking still get you cited in AI Overviews?
Only 38% of URLs cited in AI Overviews rank in Google's top ten for the same query, based on 863,000 SERPs and 4 million AI Overview URLs in March 2026 (Ahrefs). Eight months earlier, that figure was 76% (Ahrefs, July 2025). Ahrefs attributes the drop to AI Overviews moving to Gemini 3, query fan-out, and improved citation-parsing in its own method. Note that BrightEdge's tracker puts the top-10 share nearer 17% over the same period; the gap is methodological, not contradictory, so read both as directional.
The practical takeaway: ranking well is necessary but no longer sufficient to appear in AI answers. More in AI Search vs Traditional Search.
How many people use ChatGPT, Gemini and AI Mode?
- ChatGPT passed 1 billion monthly active users in May 2026, the fastest app in history to reach the milestone, per Sensor Tower data (reported by Reuters, via PYMNTS).
- ChatGPT reported around 900 million weekly active users in early 2026 (TechCrunch). Note weekly and monthly figures are different measures; do not conflate them.
- ChatGPT handles roughly 2.5 billion prompts per day (Backlinko, citing OpenAI mid-2025 figures). Given subsequent growth to 1 billion MAU, the current figure is likely higher; we will update when a newer primary number is available.
- Google's AI Mode passed 1 billion monthly users, announced at I/O in May 2026 (Google).
How AI chooses which brands and sources to cite
Generative engine optimization (GEO) is the practice of increasing a brand's visibility inside AI-generated answers. On the available data, off-site brand signals dominate the picture.
- Brand web mentions, linked or unlinked, correlate with AI Overview visibility at 0.664, versus 0.218 for backlinks, across 75,000 brands (Ahrefs). Mentions beat links by roughly three to one.
- YouTube mentions correlate at 0.737, the strongest single factor measured in the follow-up study (Ahrefs, May 2026).
- Only 11% of domains are cited by both ChatGPT and Perplexity, across a reported analysis of 680 million citations (Averi), a figure Qwairy replicated across 118,000 responses (reported by Whitehat SEO). The engines draw on largely separate source pools.
- Perplexity cites Reddit in 46.7% of its responses, across 10,000 commercial queries (Profound).
- ChatGPT's alignment with Bing's results fell from 26% to 8%, while its alignment with Google rose from 12% to 33% (Profound). It is no longer accurate to say ChatGPT simply runs on Bing.
The pattern across all of it: most of what AI knows about you is off your own site. That is the case for generative engine optimization.
Does AI referral traffic convert?
AI referral traffic is a small share of visits but converts unusually well. Read these as directional, since several are vendor-published.
- AI referral traffic converted 42% better than non-AI traffic in March 2026 (Adobe Digital Insights). Adobe's Q3 2026 report has since raised that figure to 54% for retail. Adobe published these findings alongside its own LLM Optimizer product, so treat them as directional.
- In B2B specifically, one study of 312 firms found a 14.2% conversion rate from AI referrals versus 2.8% from Google organic (Opollo, reported by Demand Local). One segment, one study; not a universal rate.
The consistent direction: people arriving from an AI answer have already done their research and arrive closer to a decision.
What does the research say about optimizing for AI?
- Google's May 2026 guidance states that optimizing for its generative AI features is, from Google's perspective, still SEO, and that you do not need special markup, content chunking, or machine-readable files like llms.txt (Google Search Central).
- Google deprecated FAQ rich results on 7 May 2026 (Search Engine Journal). FAQ markup no longer produces a rich result for ordinary sites, though the content structure still helps AI parsing.
- A controlled test across 319 prompts and seven platforms concluded schema is an SEO lever, not a GEO one, with six of seven platforms unable to read schema markup directly and ChatGPT citations falling 71% over the window (Otterly).
- The original 2023 GEO research found that adding quotations, sources and statistics boosted visibility in generative responses by up to 40%, and that a page around position five adding source citations saw a relative visibility lift of over 115% (Pranjal Aggarwal et al., arXiv:2311.09735).

A note on using these numbers
Two honest cautions, because this field is noisy.
First, prevalence and CTR figures vary widely by methodology. When you see "AI Overviews appear on X% of searches," the number depends entirely on the keyword set, geography and detection method. We cite BrightEdge's ~48% with attribution, but a lower or higher figure from another tracker is not necessarily wrong.
Second, AI statistics age fast. A number that was current in early 2026 can be stale by the end of it. Always check the date on a stat, and prefer the primary source over a roundup that does not link one, including this one.
