Featured Snippets vs AI Answers: What Changed

Chirag Aggarwal· Founder, Slate Agency//7 min read

If you have done SEO for a while, you know the featured snippet: the answer box at the top of Google, "position zero," that lifted a single passage from one page and put it above everything else. AI answers can feel like a brand-new thing, but they are really the next step from that box. The featured snippet was Google's first move toward answering instead of just linking. AI answers finish the move. Understanding what carried over, and what genuinely changed, is the fastest way to make sense of AI search, because much of what won you snippets still works, and some of it works harder now.

A featured snippet is a single block of content, a paragraph, list, or table, that Google extracts from one web page and displays in a box at the top of the results, usually with a link to the source. Winning one was a clear, single-source event: your page was judged the best direct answer to the query, and Google showed your passage, verbatim, above the normal results.

The whole game was extraction. Google was not writing anything; it was choosing the best existing passage and quoting it. That made featured snippets the first widely-seen "answer engine" behavior: the answer appeared on the results page, and the user often did not need to click. Zero-click search, in other words, started here, long before AI.

What an AI answer is

An AI answer, whether a Google AI Overview or a reply from ChatGPT or Perplexity, works differently in one crucial way: it generates rather than merely extracts. Instead of lifting one passage from one page, it reads across multiple sources, synthesizes them into a written answer, names only a few brands, and cites a handful of pages. The mechanism behind this is retrieval-augmented generation, which we explain in How LLMs Retrieve and Cite Sources.

So where a featured snippet had one winner and one source, an AI answer has a few named brands and several cited sources woven together. It is less a quote and more a summary built from many quotes.

What actually changed between snippets and AI answers

Three things changed, and it helps to separate them.

From one source to many. A featured snippet crowned a single page. An AI answer blends several, which means being "the best passage" is no longer enough on its own; you also need to be one of several sources the system trusts and pulls together.

From extraction to synthesis. Because AI answers are written, not just quoted, the model can paraphrase, combine and reframe. Your content influences the answer even when it is not quoted word for word, and being clearly and consistently described across the web shapes how you are represented.

From some click loss to much more. Featured snippets already reduced clicks. AI answers reduce them further: Ahrefs found click-through to the top-ranking page falls by around 58% when an AI Overview appears, up from the 34.5% drop the same team measured earlier in 2025. The shift from a list to an answer, and its consequences, is the subject of The New Front Page.

And the surfaces themselves are shifting. Featured snippet visibility has dropped sharply: an Ahrefs analysis of roughly 1,000,000 SERPs found featured snippet presence fell about 64% over the first half of 2025, from around 15.4% to 5.5% of queries, closely tracking the rise of AI Overviews. Featured snippets have not vanished, and on some queries both still appear, but on many searches the AI Overview now occupies the space the snippet used to.

Here is the reassuring part for anyone who invested in featured snippets: that work still pays off, and arguably pays off more.

Featured snippets did not simply get replaced; they became building blocks. Reporting suggests pages that were previously selected for featured snippets are cited in AI Overviews at roughly twice the rate of pages that were not. That makes sense: the same qualities that made a passage the single best answer, clear, direct, well-structured, trustworthy, are exactly what makes it a good source for an AI answer to pull from.

So featured snippet optimization and AI answer optimization are not competing priorities. They are the same core discipline, answer engine optimization, pointed at two surfaces that increasingly overlap. Optimizing for one is largely optimizing for the other.

What this means for how you optimize

The tactics you used to win snippets still apply, and they now serve double duty.

Answer the question directly, in the first sentence, in a self-contained passage. That is what won featured snippets and what gets lifted into AI answers. Use clear, question-style headings that mirror how people ask. Structure content so each section stands on its own. Keep information accurate and current, because both a snippet algorithm and an AI model prefer sources they can trust.

What AI answers add, on top, is a second layer the old snippet game did not require: being one of several trusted sources, not just the single best one. Ranking well still matters, but it is no longer sufficient. Ahrefs found only about 38% of AI Overview citations now come from pages ranking in the top 10 organic results, down from 76% eight months earlier, as answer engines increasingly pull from pages surfaced by related "fan-out" queries rather than the direct ranking alone. That is why off-site authority and consistent brand presence, the generative engine optimization side, now matter alongside on-page work. Winning a snippet was about your page. Winning a place in an AI answer is about your page plus how the wider web describes you.

The honest summary: keep doing the extractable-content work that won you featured snippets, because it still works, then add the authority and consistency work that AI answers reward. That combination is AI visibility.

Frequently asked questions

Are featured snippets going away?
Not entirely, but they have declined sharply. An Ahrefs analysis found featured snippet presence fell around 64% over the first half of 2025 as AI Overviews expanded. On some queries both still appear; on many, the AI Overview now occupies the space the snippet used to.
What is the difference between a featured snippet and an AI Overview?
A featured snippet extracts one passage from a single page and shows it in a box with a link. An AI Overview generates a written answer by synthesizing multiple sources, names a few brands, and cites several pages. One is a quote; the other is a summary built from many.
Does winning featured snippets still matter for AI search?
Yes, arguably more than before. Pages previously chosen for featured snippets are cited in AI Overviews at a higher rate, because the qualities that win a snippet, clear, direct, trustworthy content, are the same qualities AI answers pull from.
Do I need a different strategy for AI answers than for featured snippets?
Mostly the same, plus one addition. The extractable-content tactics that win snippets also feed AI answers. AI answers add a second requirement: being one of several trusted sources, which depends on off-site authority and consistent brand presence.
Do AI answers reduce clicks more than featured snippets did?
Yes. Featured snippets already caused zero-click searches, but AI Overviews go further, with click-through to the top result falling by roughly 58% when an Overview appears.
